Solar Storms How They Form and What They Do

Solar storms are the most fascinating and dangerous activities our star experiences. They lift off the Sun and send their fastest particles sleeting radiation across interplanetary space.   Very strong ones affect Earth and the other planets within a matter of minutes or hours. These days, with a flotilla of spacecraft studying the Sun, we get very quick warnings of upcoming storms. This gives satellite operators and others a chance to get ready for any space weather that may occur as a result. The very strongest storms can do great damage to spacecraft and humans in space, and affect systems right here on the planet. What Effects do Solar Storms Have? When the Sun acts up, the result can be as benign as a great display of northern and southern lights, or it can be much worse.  The charged particles released by the Sun have  various effects on our atmosphere. At the height of a strong solar storm, these clouds of particles interact with our magnetic field, which causes strong electrical currents that can damage technology we depend on each day. At the worst, solar storms have knocked out power grids and disrupted communications satellites. They can also bring communications and navigation systems to a halt. Some experts have testified before Congress that space weather affects peoples ability to make phone calls, use the Internet, transfer (or withdraw) money, travel by plane, train, or ship, and even use GPS to navigate in cars. So, when the Sun kicks up a little space weather due to a solar storm, its something people want to know about. It can seriously affect our lives. Why Does This Happen? The Sun goes through regular cycles of high and low activity. The 11-year solar cycle is actually a complex beast, and its not the only cycle the Sun experiences. There are others that track other solar fluctuations over longer time periods, too. But, the 11-year cycle is the one that is most associated with the kinds of solar storms that affect the planet. Why does this cycle occur? Its not completely understood, and solar physicists continue to debate the cause. the solar dynamo is involved, which is the interior process that creates the Suns magnetic field. What drives that process is still under discussion. One way to think of it is is that the internal solar magnetic field gets twisted as the Sun rotates. As it becomes entangled, magnetic field lines will pierce the surface, prohibiting hot gas to rise to the surface. This creates points that are relatively cool compared to the rest of the surface (roughly 4500 Kelvin, compared to the Sun’s normal surface temperature of about 6000 Kelvin). These cool points appear nearly black, surrounded by the yellow glow of the Sun. These are what we commonly call sunspots. As charged particles and heated gas stream from these sunspots, they create the brilliant arcs of light known as prominences. These are a normal part of the Suns appearance. The solar activities that have the most potential for destruction are solar flares and coronal mass ejection. These incredibly powerful events result from these twisted magnetic field lines reconnect with other magnetic field lines in the atmosphere of the Sun. During large flares, the reconnection can generate such energy that particles are accelerated to a high percentage of the speed of light. Causing an incredibly high flux of particles to stream toward the Earth from the Sun’s corona (upper atmosphere), where temperatures can reach into the millions of degrees. The resulting coronal mass ejection sends huge amounts of charged material out to space  and is the type of event that currently worries scientists around the world. Could the Sun Erupt in a Major Solar Storm in the Future? The short answer to this question is yes. The Sun goes through periods of solar minimum — a period of inactivity — and solar maximum, its time of highest activity. During solar minimum, the Sun doesnt have as many  sunspots, solar flares, and prominences. During solar maximum, these sorts of events can occur frequently. Its not only the frequency of these events that we need to be worried about but also their intensity. The more intense the activity, the more potential for damage there is here on Earth.   Scientists ability to forecast solar storms is still in its infancy. Clearly, once something erupts from the Sun, scientists can issue a warning about increased solar  activity. However, predicting exactly when an outburst will occur is still very difficult. Scientists track sunspots and give warnings if a particularly active one is aimed at Earth. He thought in order to do so people must examine the origins of this power, and determine what state men are in naturally. This state of nature is as follows; "a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose of their positions and persons, as they think fit, within the bounds of the law of nature." He wrote, "The state of nature has a law of nature to govern it, which treats everyone equally. Men are not perfect and naturally separate each other into stereotyped groups. The boys did manage to form some government at first, but even then they were not all treated equally. Their differences lead them to separation. Their separation caused some members of the group to be cast out, such as Ralph and Piggy. The boys were cast out because they wouldn't participate in the savagery that the others did. This proved Locke's theory to be, at least in some senses, wrong. "Lord of the Flies". (1963). Locke wrote, "The natural liberty of man is to be free from any superior power on earth, and not to be under the will or legislative authority of man, but only have the law Lord of the Flies 3 of nature for his rule." Apparently the boys in "Lord of the Flies" didn't feel that way. But given the right situation people can only cover up savagery for so long before it breaks out. These new beliefs were centered around the expanding field of science. Man was focused on more than the Gods or heavenly concerns. A government that was ruled by the people was suggested as opposed to a monarchy that had existed for many years. Freedom of religion was encouraged to be exercised in city-states. These new ideals, though good in intentions, often conflicted with each other creating complex moral dilemmas. Such was the case in Antigone a play written by Sophocles during this era of change. In the play, Antigone and Creon battle a philosophical war dealing with the controversy of the Greek ideals. They both based their actions on their beliefs of what is right and wrong. The conflict arose when the ideals that backed up their actions clashed with each other, making it contradiction between morals. Antigone's side of the conflict held a much more heavenly approach, as opposed to the mundane road that Creon chose to follow. Antigone feels that Creon is disregarding the laws of heaven through his edict. After she is captured and brought to Creon, she tells him "I do not think your edicts strong enough to overrule the unwritten unalterable laws of God and heaven, you being only a man." Antigone's staunch opinion is one that supports the Gods and the laws of heaven. Her reasoning is set by her belief that if someone is not given a proper burial, that person would not be accepted into heaven. Antigone was a very religious person, and acceptance of her brother by the Gods was very important to her. She felt that "It is against you and me he has made this order. Yes, against me." Creon's order was personal to Antigone. His edict invaded her family life as well as the Gods'. An important ideal in Ancient Greece was the belief that the government was to have no control in matters concerning religious beliefs. In Antigone's eyes, Creon betrayed that ideal by not allowing her to properly bury her brother, Polynices. She believed that the burial was a religious ceremony, and Creon did not have the power to deny Polynices that right. Antigone's strong beliefs eventually led her to her death by the hand of Creon. Never, though, did she stop defending what she thought was right. As Creon ordered her to her death, Antigone exclaimed, "I go, his prisoner, because I honoured those things in which honour truly belongs." She is directly humiliating Creon by calling his opinions and decisions weak and unjust. She also emphasizes "his prisoner," which tells us that Creon's decision to capture Antigone was his own, and was not backed up by the majority of the people. She feels that Creon is abusing his power as king and dealing with her task to a personal level. Creon's actions are guided by the ideal that states "Man is the measure of all things." The chorus emphasizes this point during the play by stating that "There is nothing beyond (man's) power." Creon believes that the good of man comes before the gods. Setting the example using Polynices' body left unburied is a symbol of Creon's belief. "No man who is his country's enemy shall call himself my friend." This quote shows that leaving the body unburied is done to show respect for Thebes. After all, how could the ruler of a city-state honor a man who attempted to invade and conquer his city. From that perspective, Creon's actions are completely just and supported by the ideals. Though most of Creon's reasonings coincide with the Greek ideals, one ideal strongly contradicts his actions. The ideal states that the population would be granted freedom from political oppression and that freedom of religion would be carried out. Creon defied both of these. First, Antigone was "his prisoner", not necessarily the publics. In fact, the general population supported Antigone, though they were too scared to say anything. Life is exciting, and it will be surprising to find many things that have been avoided in particular society, somehow become most loved in others. A simple example is vegemite, while there were 10 of 10 of American kids felt it was disgusting[1], for sure, many Australians and New Zealanders will argue. Even, Australian dairy company, Bega, has spent A$460 million to acquire the brand back to Australian hand.[2] From that example, some questions might arouse: why those kids hate vegemite?; Why Australians and New Zealanders love vegemite?; How vegemite can be accepted in USA markets?. In an academic environment, some of those questions might lead to research. This essay will discuss research process, in particular, the process of planning research. And within it, explaining the definition of research and research process, the relationship between research topic and research question, the importance o f literature review, how the use of theory affect research approach/design, the goal of research a proposal and the importance of argument in academic writing. O Leary defines that the process of developing new knowledge by gathering data that answers a particular question is called Research[3]. So, what are those questions? For some, it is their concerns in issues encountered in life, for instance, poverty, famine, corruption, etc. For others, it will come from their passion for enjoying life. It is all the questions which relates to the need of new knowledge to solve our problems and curiosities[4]. However, there are, in some circumstances, many complexities to determine people behavior and their decisions, so, research needs plans, strategy, firm decision, and while at the same times, flexible to new changes to find the right knowledge to understand the p roblems, hence, be able to offer suitable recommendations for better future. As, O Leary mentioned that research is a creative and strategic process that involves continually assessing, reassessing, and making decisions about the best possible means for obtaining trustworthy information, carrying out appropriate analysis, and drawing credible conclusions[5]. Research process is a journey full of challenges which needs strategy, plan, every strength and support available to make it succeed in times and end up with expected result[6]. It is a journey to find answ ers that is different from traveling where it has certain sets of destination. As new questions will emerge, society develop, human have a never-ending curiosity, problem bound to happen anytime and anywhere. The initial step in planning research is to find a well-thought research topic, and from those formulate a research question that structures a well-executed research. A research topic is an idea which will be the background of a research[11]. And as mentioned, with human curiosity, passions, issues, and problem surrounding, there will be no lack of idea. The challenge is on how to narrow down from so many interest surround, a remarkable idea that is feasible could come out[12]. O Leary explained that there are three ways to obtain research topic: 1. Concept mapping, which offers enhancement of creativity by looking problems from many perspectives, and therefore, have a brainstorm for a research topic; 2. Turning to literature, to identify information, ideas, theories and problems for research topics from a different perspective; 3. Looking for inspiration, that might be drawn from, personal insight and experiences, observations, contemporary/timely issues, and, identifying stakeholde rs need[13]. After research topic confirmed, well-articulated research questions are important, as to indicate the level of understanding of the topics and to structure logical course of action, to define an investigation, to set boundaries, to provide direction and to act as a frame of reference for assessing progress[14]. It will be the milestones for research process, set as achievable goals that tell how far steps has been taken, and how far it is needed to the end point. However, it is in researcher discretion to assess and reassess the questions to appropriately stay on track, undertake another direction based on new information, and new interesting information found[15]. Next principle step to plan and to prepare good research is reviewing literature. For most, Literature review is not new research, it is a way to learn from past knowledge, which offers unlimited theories, methodology, and experiences, as a valuable starting point to design research[16]. Delving into literatures strengthens the level of understanding of research topic, defines and redefines research questions, uncovers gaps in research rationales for further identification, and compares past approaches from various researches that have previously been conducted to discover suitable approach for own research[17]. Argument occupies a very important place in writing Literature review as an initial part of research. Even literature review itself is a purposeful argument, a form of argument to inform audience of what is happening in the field, to establish credibility as a knowledgeable and capable researcher, to argue the relevance and significance of research question, to provide the co ntext for own methodological approach and to argue the relevance and appropriateness of approach[18]. In doing so, it needs a strong evidence-based argument by compare and contrast own argument with past researchers, then synthesize and make arguments in own perspective as a part of further research[19]. Having confidence needed to initiate a research from reviewing literature, the next step is to develop most appropriate research approach and design. Understand on how theory used within research gives an overview to develop an effective approach. Explained by Creswell that each approach has its unique way of using theory. In quantitative approach, a theory will be used deductively, placed in the initial part of the research to provide an explanation or prediction about the relationship between variables and how variables affect other. The theory will be tested throughout the process in order to prove the validity of researcher prediction of variables relationship in particular aspects and environments. In qualitative approach, there are four ways on how theory is used: 1. As a broad explanation for behavior and attitudes, it is much similar on how theory used in quantitative approach where a general description of behavior and attitudes will begin the research, and series of prepare d hypothesis will be tested throughout; 2. As a theoretical lens or perspective; the perspective based on theoretical aspects such as race; gender; class, shapes research topics, questions, method and on how researcher position themselves that will obviously affect the written report and recommendations. 3. As an end point, in this case, theory will be the product of inductive thinking process of a research, where, collected bit of information will be developed into theory, generalizations, patterns, and then, compared with experience and existing literature to form researcher theorys; 4. In some qualitative study theory is not used, in these case researcher constructs a rich detailed description of a central phenomenon. In mixed method research, theory is used as a framework, social and transformative, that affect research methods in collecting, analyzing, processing quantitative and qualitative information[20]. The Last step in planning a research, as an expression of readiness to embark on the journey, is composing research proposal. Research proposal is a writing to convince other, a mean to argue that selected research questions are significance in obtaining results, a way to show that research methodology is effective, efficient and ethical to answers questions, and sometimes, it is the only opportunity to show potential as a researcher worthy for the job[21]. To construct convincing research proposal, all elements of research proposal; title; aims/objective; research questions/hypothesis; introduction; literature review; theoretical perspective; methods; limitations/delimitations; ethical considerations; timeline; budget/funding; and references should be written in a way to show clarity of thoughts, veracity of arguments and researcher potential[22]. The goal is to seek approval from admission boards, funding body or an ethic committee to initiate research, and by overcome the challeng es and meet the requirements[23], research plan will be tested and perfected. The Reality of Discrimination Essay -- Literary Analysis, To Kill a Mo

The famous novel, To Kill Mockingbird, portrayed such literary excellence, that it will always be a large mark on the history of American literature. In To Kill a Mockingbird, a novel set in the 1930s about a child heroine, discrimination and prejudices both play key roles throughout. Today, one could not imagine what life would have been like had they lived during these times. Scout Finch, a girl who, in this novel, begins to understand the reality of the problems in her small southern town, was faced with discrimination in many instances. Three forms of discrimination throughout To Kill a Mockingbird were discrimination against gender, race, and the unknown. The first example of discrimination in To Kill a Mockingbird is by gender, or sexism. There were only two children in the family of Atticus Finch: Jeremy â€Å"Jem† Atticus Finch and Jean Louise â€Å"Scout† Finch. Being that there were no other children in their neighborhood, the two children always played together. When the duo met Charles â€Å"Dill† Baker Harris one summer, they were instantly friends. To Scout, being â€Å"one of the boys† was never a problem. However, Jem and Dill began to think otherwise. When Jem became angry with Scout because of an argument over â€Å"Hot Steams†, he decides to push her, while inside the tire, down the walk and into the Radley front gate. Worried, Jem screams for her to hurry back to them; in her daze she forgot the tire. Jem ran to get it; when he came back he was scowling, â€Å"Nothin’ to it. I swear, Scout, sometimes you act so much like a girl it’s mortifyin’† (Lee 50). He used her being a girl as an insult, despite the fact that he too was scared. However, the conflict really began when Dill and Jem decided to try to make the infamous Boo ... ...ion and insult, which they would never have expected. (Felty 300) This shows the extent of seriousness with the racial discrimination dispersed throughout the South during these times. In conclusion, discrimination of gender, the unknown, and race were all present in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. The reasons for the prejudices and discrimination were all the same. These were the â€Å"ways† in the Southern communities, and the people of Maycomb knew no other way to live. They acted out of habit because this habit was the way they were raised by their parents and their parents by their grandparents, and so on. However, starting with the trial, things would slowly begin to change. Scout would be a part of this change as she grew and her innocence was put behind her. This novel will always represent Southern American History and the ways our society changed.
